The National Housing Cooperative Law Center

A website designed specifically for the boards and those professionals who work for housing cooperatives. It contains the statutes, regulations and case law affecting cooperatives, as well as many of our articles, primers and course materials. In addition, there is an ever-expanding list of housing cooperatives with links to their websites, where known. This website also contains a history of housing cooperatives, a summary of the distinctive qualities of this form of housing, a glossary of housing cooperative terms, and a comparison between cooperatives and condominiums.

The National Association Of Housing Cooperatives

The National Association of Housing Cooperatives (NAHC) is the leading national organization of housing cooperatives, providing education and advocacy for the cooperative movement. An annual conference is held in various locations, providing training for board members and cooperative professionals. It also publishes the “Cooperative Housing Quarterly” consisting of timely and valuable articles of interest to the cooperative community. NAHC sponsors a special training program for cooperative managers known as the “Registered Cooperative Manager” or “RCM.” It retains a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., who works with HUD and Congress to help shape laws and policies to advance the cooperative movement. Mr. Pentiuk serves on the NAHC Board as its Executive Vice President, and is on its Government Relations Committee.

The Midwest Association Of Housing Cooperatives

The Midwest Association of Housing Cooperatives (MAHC) is a regional cooperative organization serving housing cooperatives in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio and elsewhere in the nation. It presents an annual training conference as well as state-by-state training opportunities for directors and professionals. MAHC has developed “Certified Cooperative Directors,” “Certified Cooperative Specialists” and “Certified Cooperative Managers” programs, and holds special training classes and continuing education for the participants. It publishes the “MAHC Messenger” for its members to help them keep abreast of developments and news in the housing cooperative community. Mr. Pentiuk serves on the MAHC Board and is the MAHC Messenger editor. He also serves as the State Vice President for Michigan.

The United States Department of Housing And Urban Development

The United States Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) maintains a website known as HUD Clips. For housing cooperatives that are subject to a regulatory or use agreement with HUD, or have another form of HUD related financing or assistance, this site is a useful tool for finding official federal policies and rulings affecting their obligations.
