Matthew Nicols joined Pentiuk, Couvreur & Kobiljak, P.C. in July 2017. Prior to joining PCK, Mr. Nicols was a staff attorney for various legal aid offices in Detroit, Michigan, where he focused his practice in all forms of governmental subsidized housing, consumer defense litigation, and appellate practice. As an associate attorney at PCK, Mr. Nicols is involved in General Practice, Litigation and Appellate Practice. His focus is primarily in Real Estate Disputes and Transactions, Landlord-Tenant, Housing Cooperatives and Condominium Associations. Mr. Nicols also represents Cooperative and Condominium Associations with Corporate Governance, Commercial and Residential Real Estate Transactions, and Bankruptcy matters. He also represents Governmental and Public Housing Authorities and represents various business entities in General Business Litigation. He focuses on Civil Litigation, Property & Real Estate matters, as well as Appellate Practice.
In addition to representing clients and associations in litigation matters, Mr. Nicols has provided assistance and contributions for various articles and publication in the MAHC Messenger as well as PCK’s own Cooperative and Condominium Law Journals. He is also a member of the Downriver Bar Association. Mr. Nicols also assists clients with drafting amendments to corporate governing documents and policies (Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and Policies) in PCK’s efforts to ensure our client’s corporate documents are updated and accommodating to changes in the law. He has extensive experience and knowledge in all forms of governmental and subsidized housing programs administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA). In addition, Mr. Nicols is a zealous advocate for our clients both in and out of the courtroom.
Mr. Nicols is licensed to practice law in the States of Michigan and Illinois. He is also licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Mr. Nicols received his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. During law school, Mr. Nicols clerked at Legal Aid & Defender Association assisting in the foreclosure defense litigation department. He was also the recipient of the Voice for Justice Fellowship Grant and Ford Community Corps Partnership Grant which enabled him to host several free/pro-bono legal clinics for low-income families in Detroit neighborhoods facing foreclosure and housing crisis. Prior to law school, Mr. Nicols attended Arizona State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude and receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in the field of Justice Studies and Social Inquiry. Before moving back to his beloved home state of Michigan, Mr. Nicols clerked for a collections firm in Tempe Arizona.
