GROSSE ILE -- Residents can find a familiar face when they look to their new township supervisor.

Kurt Kobiljak, 38, was recently elected to the post of township supervisor, but he is no stranger to residents or the board members he presides over.

"Grosse Ile is near and dear to my interests, and it's my thought that if you take an active involvement in your community, it will be a better place to live for you and your family," Kobiljak said.

Kobiljak said his immediate goals include finishing the $40 million sewer replacement project mandated by the Department of Environment Quality, as well as work toward taking possession of the toll and county bridges that allow entry and exit off of the island.

Kobiljak, who is a lifelong resident on the island, was a township trustee for eight years and was elected treasurer in 2000. His civic involvement includes co-founding the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy, The Animal Island League Shelter and the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation.

His involvement over the years has helped him gain insight on the issues important to residents, as well as prepared him to lead the township, said Doug Jones, former township manager.

"I have worked with Kobiljak all while I was in office. We made sure it was a very seamless transition," Jones said. "I don't think residents will know the difference other than a new face at the board meetings."

Kobiljak said he plans to continue Jones' efforts to build a consensus among board members, commission and committee members on the island.

"I am going to diligently attempt to do the same thing and make sure everyone is on the same page," Kobiljak said.
